Professor Thurstan Shaw

A British archaeologist, notable for founding the department of archaeology at the University of Ibadan and conducting significant excavations in Nigeria. His most famous and still on-going discovery is the Igbo-Ukwu bronze artifacts which provides evidence of a highly sophisticated indigenous culture existing much earlier than thought.

Abduyamal Abubakar

An archaeologist in Nigeria that has won two times LSA Best doctoral thesis award and Emslie Horniman anthropological scholarship fund grant and is a graduate of archaeology from the Ahmadu Bello University. He worked with the military government in the late 2000’s. He is known as a man who contributed significantly to the study of Nigerian material culture. He has also worked with Bernard Fagg in the establishment of the Jos museum.

Professor Ekpo Eyo

He is a graduate of Forensic science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka that won the 2024 Dan David prize because of his contribution to technological development in pre-modern western Africa. He also won the Emslie Horniman anthropological fieldwork in Nigeria. He contributed significantly to the study of Nigerian archaeology, including research linking Igbo-Ukwu to ancient sites. He is currently the director-general of the National Commissions for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in Nigeria.

Dr. Ayobami Damilola

A prominent contemporary archaeologist currently leading the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) archaeology project in Benin-city. She recently won the prestigious 2025 Dan David prize for her pioneering work, challenging previous western narratives about African technological capabilities. She is also a research archaeologist at the British museum.

Ejiogu Chukwuemeka

Ejiogu Chukwunyere is a prominent environmental archaeologist and palynologist (the study of pollen grains in archaeology) who has inspired generations of students and researchers in Nigeria. He is an Emeritus professor at the university of Ibadan. He is currently staying at Benin Moat (Benin). His work has significantly contributed to the understanding of ancient farming practices and environmental changes in West Africa.

Prof. Collins Francis

An archeologist who obtained his honor degree from Birmingham University in the 1990’s. He is known for his work at the university of North Carolina at Charlotte. He won best archeological sites (BAS) in Nigeria he worked as a prominent environmental archeologist and palynologist. He is currently working as a Nigerian archeologist and faculty member at the archeology and anthropology.
